Coeliac
disease or Celiac disease is and autoimmune disorder of the small
intestine. It is caused by an allergic
reaction to gliadin which is a prolamin (gluten protein) found in the wheat and
other similar proteins.
The
symptoms of this disease are variable and that is why in many cases it is
difficult to know whether you are suffering from celiac or not. Some of them
are:
- · Abdominal pain
- · Changes on appetite
- · Diarrhea
- · Lactose intolerance
- · Vomiting and nausea
- · Unexplained weight changes
Celiac
disease cannot be cured. Symptoms can disappear if a gluten-free diet is
followed, and also would improve the quality of the intestine. However not following this kind of diet will
decrease your quality of life and will cause irreversible damages like:
- · Autoimmune disorders
- · Bones diseases like osteoporosis , kyphoscoliosis and fractures
- · Intestinal cancer
- · Anemia
- · Infertility
The
problem about this illness is that many people that suffer from it don´t even
realize they have till is too late for them and it has caused so many damages in their bodies.
We
need to encourage people to get to know this illness. There are restaurants
that don´t even know what gluten-free diet means, or where they might have an
idea about what is it and might probably serve products with gluten unintentionally. So that’s why we also need to encourage people to donate and support
the Celiac Disease Foundation.
Your donation would help others through advocacy,
education and advancing research.
